Movie Review: Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol

Tom Cruise is fascinating. The polarizing actor keeps us guessing and it is a practice in patience. No one doubts his talent. No one doubts his charisma. He remains a star though his recent antics made the public doubtful. Mentioning the couch-jumping episode has become quite a cliche that calling it cliche is a cliche in itself. But he keeps making films and this makes him far better than tabloid fodders. Plus these films – though not superb – are not terrible. Consider Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. Never mind the plot because it is one of the more exciting action films of 2011. Never mind if animation staple Brad Bird directed the project because JJ Abrams is still part of the team. Never mind if Tom Cruise is the lead star because Simon Pegg is quite a scene-stealer. Never mind if this is not a proper review because this is a list of  breath-taking moments of Ghost Protocol. Never mind the spoilers because Tom Cruise remains fascinating.

THRILLING SCENE 1: AGENT ETHAN HUNT ESCAPES

Pegg is the tech genius manning the rescue mission and he orchestrates the plan with a soundtrack. The jail outbreak progressed to the tune of “Ain’t that a Kick in the Head.” Classic. Dean Martin. Oh. The jailhouse detonated as the iconic Mission: Impossible theme blared in the background. Beautiful.

THRILLING SCENE 2: FLASHBACK OF AGENT HANAWAY INTERCEPTING A FILE

There is something amusing and almost comical about this scene despite its tragic end.

THRILLING SCENE 3: KREMLIN MISSION

Russia conjures images tactical battles of spies and counter-spies. So it is just fitting the more memorable sequences is set in Kremlin. Three things NOT EXPECTED to make a thriller more thrilling: a) iPad b) hologram screen and c) a plastic soundmaker. But it all made sense.

THRILLING SCENE 4: HOSPITAL ESCAPE

I like the odd relationship of Hunt and a stubborn Russian police officer. Instead of shooting or capturing Hunt while he was in a precarious position, the police officer lighted a cigarette and mockingly measured his opponent’s abilities. Not a good decision.

THRILLING SCENE 5: CLIMBING THE BURJ KHALIFA IN DUBAI

The cool thing about this sequence is that it became more and more exciting as it progressed. I am not going to discuss the details but it is notable to mention British humor is a perfect companion during a huge action build-up. I LOVE YOU SIMON PEGG.

THRILLING SCENE 6: SANDSTORM CHASE

Suspend more disbelief as Cruise chased the main antagonist in Dubai during a terrible sandstorm. Director Brad Bird made sure the red sand devouring Cruise is both frightening and artistic.

THRILLING SCENE7: TURBINE JUMP

Goodness gracious JEREMY RENNER. Hurt Locker did him so good he is part of one big-budgeted  film after another. He is terrific as tortured soul characters so it is nice to see him in a hilarious situation. The most famous and most spoofed Mission: Impossible stunt gets parodied in its fourth installment.

THRILLING SCENE 8: A MISSILE

A film featuring a megalomaniac ALWAYS TRY to turn metropolises into smithereens. But the hero ALWAYS MAKE SURE this insane plan goes pfft. The photo-finish ending is so old but  a screen hero screaming “Mission accomplished!”, makes it more FUN AND CORNY. Oops. Spoiler.

RATING: B
